Homemade Play-Doh Recipe!!

Playing with play-dough is one of life’s great pleasures! Most of us remember playing with this dough as kids. Even if you are an adult, you can still appreciate this simple joy! I encourage everyone to make a batch and use it for creative play as well as stress relief. The ingredients and steps are pretty simple! If you like, you can even add some drops of essential oil to create an aromatherapy experience for additional stress relief and soothing!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup salt

  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar

  • 2 cups lukewarm water

  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil (coconut oil works too)

  • Food coloring, optional

  • Essential oil in the scent of your choice (I recommend lavender, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, ylang ylang, & lemongrass as a few options, you can even combine scents!), optional

  • Quart sized bags

Steps:

Combine the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large cooking pot, stirring well before adding the water and the oil. If you want to make colored dough, now would be the time to add some drops of food coloring; just add a few drops at a time while continuing to stir until you have reached your desired color!

Put this large pot of pretty colored dough on the stovetop, and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Continue stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form into a ball. Once a ball is formed, turn off the heat and remove the dough, allowing to cool on a sheet of waxed paper or by putting inside a gallon-sized ziploc bag.

Let the dough ball cool down a bit, and then start kneading it until it is smooth. Now would be a good time to add a few drops of essential oil (if you choose to do so), and gently knead until combined. Pro tip, this is a great way to make use of some of those latex gloves everyone has at home right now!

Once everything is all mixed together you are ready to par-tayyyyyyy! Play! Create! Knead! Mold! Cut! Smash! Build! Destroy! Sniff! Do anything you like with your beautiful play-dough creation! Store inside a plastic container or ziploc bag to maintain freshness.
